Pirate lived his best life with co-owner Lena “Missy” Huskinson. He loved watching over their menagerie of farm critters as well as the grandkids once they started arriving. In the summertime he loved leaping into his custom made swimming pool to chase his favorite ball. This silly boy found all sorts of ways to entertain, including rolling a large metal stock watering tank like a hamster in a gigantic wheel, and using the metal bridge over the creek like a trampoline when he discovered that it had a bit of a bounce as you crossed over it. Whenever his daily treks to help with farm chores took him across this path, he would spend several minutes bouncing up and down on it with great glee!

Missy did a great job of training Pirate, but she handed him off to me when it came to showing or competing in any official performance activities. Pirate easily did any task we put in front of him: earning his Coursing Ability title in temperatures hovering around 100º, acing the skills needed to knock out his Rally Novice title, and easily checking off the requirements to add the Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog Novice titles to his list of accomplishments.

This handsome and athletic boy was well on his way to earning his AKC Championship, with one of his major wins accomplished, when he went in for what was supposed to be a simple medical procedure…but ended up in sudden cardiac arrest when the vet used a pre-anesthetic that is known to cause reactions in our breed. Sadly this precious boy’s life was cut far too short due to the vet’s ignorance and instead his life is another sad testimony that Acepromazine or “ACE” should never be used on Bulldogs. It also underscores the importance of using a vet who is experienced in treating our breed. Missy and I were heartbroken at his senseless loss.
